Hobart City Council CBD Resurfacing Works
Hobart City Council

In April 2018 the Hobart City Council awarded Roadways a $2.2 million contract to deliver road resurfacing works on a number of high usage roads within the Hobart CBD.   Council identified a number of streets and intersections within the Hobart CBD that required reconstruction and repair work to be undertaken. The works were specified to address areas of failed seal and or pavement. The proposed solutions included asphalt overlay and deep lift asphalt solutions based on Austroads design methodology.

There are 7 sites that were included within the 2018 program. The work involved developing an asphalt mix that would withstand low speed, high traffic volumes and loads.  All works were undertaken at night to minimise traffic disruption and allow for continuous and uninterrupted site preparation and laying of the asphalt mix.

There were many challenges to overcome including identifying and protecting services, minimising disruption to road users,  old defunct tram lines to be removed and variable quality substrates.  Site works involved, milling off the old pavement, excavating and removing old tram line (Murray Street), laying of deep lift and wearing course asphalts and finally reinstating line marking.

Roadways crews and subcontractor teams commenced work in April 2018 and worked each night for a number of weeks to successfully deliver the contract to Council’s satisfaction.
